Svaneti Road Trip by Motorhome: Mestia, Ushguli & the Zagari Loop
Why Travel to Svaneti by Motorhome?
Some places in Georgia are worth visiting for a single landmark. Svaneti is different. Here, the road itself becomes part of the experience: deep valleys, medieval Svan towers, glacial rivers, high Caucasus peaks and villages that feel unlike anywhere else in the country.
For a motorhome or campervan traveler, Svaneti offers something especially attractive. In the right season and with suitable road conditions, you do not necessarily have to drive to Mestia and return the same way. A memorable loop can take you from Zugdidi and Jvari into Upper Svaneti, through Mestia and Ushguli, then across the high mountain section toward Zagari, Lentekhi and Lechkhumi.
That route lets you experience two very different sides of Svaneti — and turns the journey into a true cross-mountain road trip rather than a simple out-and-back drive.
From Zugdidi and Jvari into Upper Svaneti
The classic approach to Upper Svaneti begins from the Zugdidi side and continues through Jvari toward Mestia. As the road climbs along the Enguri valley, the landscape changes quickly: lowlands give way to steep gorges, forested slopes and increasingly dramatic mountain scenery.
This is not a route to rush. In Svaneti, a distance that looks short on a map can take much longer than expected because of mountain roads, viewpoints, villages and weather. For camper travelers, that is part of the appeal. The vehicle is not simply transportation — it is your base while the landscape changes around you.
Mestia — A Base for Exploring Svaneti
Mestia is the main travel hub of Upper Svaneti and a natural place to pause before continuing deeper into the mountains. It is a useful base for local walks, mountain views and trips toward surrounding valleys and glaciers.
Svaneti is shaped by ice and high mountains. Well-known glacier areas include Chalaadi, Adishi and Shkhara, while the broader region offers some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in Georgia.
For a road trip, however, one of the most memorable stages begins when you leave Mestia and continue toward Ushguli.
The Mestia to Ushguli Road
Ushguli is not far from Mestia in straight-line road-trip terms, but this is exactly the kind of mountain journey where distance alone tells you very little. Road surfaces and conditions can change after rain, landslides, maintenance work or early snow.
Current regional travel information describes the Mestia–Ushguli road as passable with care. That wording matters: travelers in a large motorhome should check the latest road conditions before departure and should not assume that a route suitable for a compact car is automatically suitable for every camper.
The reward is the journey itself. Villages, towers, steep valleys and snow-covered peaks appear throughout the route, making the drive one of the most memorable stages of a Svaneti road trip.
Ushguli — Medieval Towers Beneath Shkhara
Ushguli is a community of historic mountain villages beneath the Shkhara massif. The village of Chazhashi is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property of Upper Svaneti, an area recognized for its exceptional mountain landscape and concentration of medieval tower houses.
The setting is extraordinary: stone towers and traditional houses stand against a backdrop of high Caucasus peaks. Above the valley rises Shkhara, the highest point in Georgia, and the Enguri River begins in the glacial landscape below it.
This combination of architecture, living mountain culture and enormous natural scale is what makes Ushguli more than a photo stop. It is worth slowing down and staying long enough to experience the valley at different times of day.
Walk Toward Shkhara Glacier
If your schedule allows, keep a separate day for the Shkhara valley rather than leaving Ushguli immediately.
The local Svaneti tourism resource describes the Shkhara Glacier walk as a 12 km return route taking about four hours, with approximately 400 metres of ascent. The usual walking season is June through September, and the approach follows the valley from Ushguli toward the glacier.
The trail is relatively gentle in elevation but remains a mountain route with uneven, stony ground. Weather above 2,000 metres can change quickly, so travelers should carry suitable layers and avoid treating the walk like an ordinary city excursion.
The glacier landscape is also the source area of the Enguri. Seeing the river begin beneath the ice gives the route a completely different sense of scale.
Instead of Turning Back: Continue Toward Zagari and Lentekhi
This is where the route becomes especially interesting for experienced road travelers.
Rather than returning from Ushguli to Mestia, it can be possible in suitable seasonal conditions to continue toward Lasdili, the Zagari high-mountain section and Lentekhi. From there the journey continues into Lower Svaneti and toward Lechkhumi.
The scenery changes again. The exposed high-mountain landscape gradually gives way to greener valleys, forests and river gorges. Instead of seeing the same road twice, you cross Svaneti and emerge into another part of western Georgia.
For travelers who enjoy the journey as much as the destination, this is one of the most rewarding ways to understand the geography of the region.
Can You Drive the Full Svaneti Loop in a Motorhome?
Yes — potentially, but not with every vehicle, not in every weather condition and not at every time of year.
As of 30 August 2026, Georgia’s Roads Department reported restored traffic on the relevant Lentekhi–Lasdili and Ushguli–Lasdili sections. At that time, traffic was unrestricted for most vehicle types, while vehicles with trailers or semi-trailers and certain large M3 passenger vehicles remained restricted on specified sections.
That official update should not be treated as a permanent guarantee. The same corridor had been temporarily closed after landslides and flooding earlier in the summer, demonstrating how quickly mountain-road conditions can change.
For a compact campervan or suitable 4×4, the route may be considerably easier than for a long, low-clearance motorhome. For a large motorhome, the decision should take into account vehicle dimensions, ground clearance, driver experience, current weather and the latest official road status.

How Many Days Should You Give Svaneti?
Svaneti is not a region to turn into a race. A satisfying trip should leave several days for Mestia, Ushguli, a walk toward Shkhara and the mountain road itself.
One of the main advantages of traveling by motorhome is that you do not have to force every day into a fixed hotel-to-hotel schedule. If the weather is perfect, the mountains are clear and you find a place where you want to stay another night, flexibility becomes part of the experience.
For families or first-time camper travelers, shorter driving days are usually more enjoyable. Experienced mountain-road travelers may cover more ground, but even then it is wise to leave margin for weather and road changes.
Svaneti Is a Journey, Not a Point on the Map
People come to Svaneti for the towers, Ushguli, Shkhara and the glaciers. But the strongest memories often come from what happens between those places: the changing valleys, an unexpected viewpoint, a slow morning beneath the mountains or the decision to stay one more night.
A motorhome makes that kind of travel possible. Instead of arriving, taking a photograph and leaving, you can wake up in the Caucasus, adjust your route to the weather and continue through the mountains when conditions allow.
RVrent.ge can help you choose a suitable motorhome, campervan or 4×4 for a Svaneti road trip and plan the route around the season, vehicle and latest road conditions.
Important Road Note
Mountain-road status in Svaneti can change rapidly because of rain, landslides, flooding, snow and road works. Always check the latest official restrictions immediately before attempting the Ushguli–Lasdili–Lentekhi section. Do not rely on an older article, map application or social-media video as proof that the road is currently suitable for your vehicle.
